About the Project
The 701 Rio project is located within a height restricted development zone in downtown Austin, Texas at the Northeast corner of Rio Grande St and 7th Street. The 5 story building will offer 120,000 square feet of office space and a five level, below ground parking structure for 296 vehicles.
Shotcrete Construction
CCP Shotcrete placed all subterranean perimeter parking garage walls via wet mix shotcrete. Approximately 1,600 cubic yards was placed across six basement levels between August and October of 2020. Walls were completed with a sponge float finish and cured with a cure and seal spray-on membrane per project specifications. Prior to start, a shotcrete mock-up was performed to qualify the overall placement approach, concrete material specifications, concrete finish, personnel abilities and equipment performance.
Why Shotcrete at 701 Rio?
The implementation of shotcrete walls accelerated the overall project schedule by over one month compared to one sided cast in place wall placement. Since shotcrete requires very little crane time, the project’s single tower crane was able to keep other trades working uninterrupted. And unlike cast in place concrete walls, shotcrete did not require any floor space for engineered forms and related bracing.
Shotcrete Work Sequence
The retention system (by others) consisted of a soil nail and tie-back system with a shotcrete facing. Project trade partners installed the waterproofing membrane and wall reinforcement in preparation of shotcrete work. Concrete pours of each level was split into two pour breaks, allowing in an uninterrupted sequence work flow between all subcontractors. Walls were shot starting at the bottom most level, working upwards one level at a time. Hot weather concrete and related safety considerations were at the forefront of this project during the Texas summer months.
