TXDOT 14 FT CMP SHOTCRETE CULVERT LINING

McLENNAN COUNTY FM 933 CULVERT REPAIR

About the Project

The McLennan County FM 933 Culvert Repair Project near Waco, Texas was performed in the summer of 2017. The Texas Department of Transportation identified the existing corrugated metal pipe (CMP) as needing to be repaired and re-lined. TXDoT specified the contractor to “encase the inside of the existing CMP with 8,803 sf of pneumatically placed concrete.”

Shotcrete Construction

A utilities and highway contractor was awarded the entire project, consisting of the culvert repair and other roadway improvements along FM 933. The general contractor prepared the pipe by cleaning out any debris, and installing and anchoring 3 x 3 welded wire fabric mesh. CCP was selected by the utilities contractor to provide all materials, labor and equipment to shotcrete a 4 inch liner for the pipe measuring 14 feet in diameter and 172 feet in length. A consistent, 360 degree liner was placed during the course of 5 consecutive work days. Project schedule allowed for lining placement to the invert level within 2 days. The final three days were concentrated on the vertical and overhead positions. An accelerating concrete admixture was introduced near the shotcrete nozzle to improve placement production. Concrete was brought to a rod cut final finish. The decision to rehabilitate the culvert with shotcrete in lieu of a slip form or proprietary liner saved the transportation department money and resulted in dramatic time savings.
